FAQs

How does therapy work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.

How can I find a therapist & How do I start therapy?

I've written about how to find a therapist and how to start therapy before, check this post for rundown of the processes!

How long will it take?

It's difficult to answer this question in a general FAQ. Tength of counseling varies for each person, some people may be in therapy for several years, while others may go to therapy for 2 months.

I encourage people considering therapy to be willing to commit to at least 6-8 sessions before deciding if you should continue, try a different therapist, or pause therapy.

Can I just take medication?

Research demonstrates that psychotropic medication is most effective when used in conjunction with psychotherapy. Medication by itself can be useful, and therapy by itself can be useful, but they work even better together.

Medication cannot eliminate every problem, either. Talking to a professional can help you identify your goals, meet those goals, and increase insight around the ways your thoughts, feelings, and actions influence the distress in your life.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

I am so glad you are asking this question and considering your role.

Your active participation and commitment to change each week during our session and outside of our sessions will be incredibly beneficial to your success.

I ask clients to let me know if a session felt "off" to you; or if there are any uncomfortable feelings coming up for you about our work.

Some uncomfortable feelings are a natural product of therapy, but it's always best to talk about your experience during therapy with your therapist.

Telehealth may also be known as telemedicine, virtual therapy, and online counseling.

Online therapy had a "big break" during the initial onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual therapy appointments can be as effective as in-person therapy sessions and are convenient.

Knowing if telehealth is right for you depends on your preference, availability, and potentially insurance.
